In an interview conducted by Kaili Mauricio of the temporary workers of Lawrence, it was found that a majority of them believed that their poor English-speaking skills cost them permanent jobs. The employee inputs ranged from low confidence in speaking English to the inability to hold a conversation in proper English.

  • Weak Social Network:

It was found that most of the contractual staff had a weak social network. A majority of them said that the maximum their acquaintances of past and current jobs could do was to help them get another temporary one. The few who had luckily got permanent jobs cited hard work, past work experience, and sound technical knowledge as the foundation of such employment.

  • Lack of proper degrees:

A large chunk of the temporary workers admit to not having proper education or degrees. Due to the financial crunch, they started working. After missing several classes courtesy rigorous work schedules, they were kicked out of the schools.

  • Less number of permanent jobs:

With a collapsing economy in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, several permanent workers have been laid off. Companies have cut down their workforce to the bare minimum and are depending heavily on cheap and affordable part-time workers hired through contract staffing vendors. As contractual staffs are not usually provided employee benefits, healthcare, and insurance, companies benefit from the low expenditure and try to recover.

Contractual staffing has its benefits as well, from providing flexible work-schedules to earning more by working multiple jobs. But a majority of temporary employees prefer a secure job which offers monetary security along with basic benefits. Often, several companies hire temporary workers and choose the best among them as their permanent staff, but the number of such companies has reduced in the COVID-19-afflicted world.

Though several companies prefer contractual staffing, some still yearn for dedicated, long-term employees. The only hope for contractual workers lies in acquiring proper training in language skills, especially those who wish to obtain permanent jobs. Once the economy gets back to its feet, things will get easier. Till then, contractual staffing remains the holy grail to success for employers and employees alike.
